When it comes to dog IQ rankings, the first place always reminds people of the extremely smart “Border Collie”, whose IQ is equivalent to a human being of 6 to 7 years old.

In addition, breeds such as Corgis, Shiba Inu, French Bulldogs, Chihuahuas, etc. that are very popular in Taiwan, where will they probably be located in the IQ rankings of the dog world?

At the end of the article, I will share with you a 5-question “quiz”. It only takes 3 minutes to easily calculate the intelligence score of your dog, regardless of breed or size!

How is the IQ of dogs ranked?

Dog IQ Rankings

When we look at the ranking of dog IQ, we must first understand that “dogs are very smart animals in nature”!

The average IQ is like that of a child aged 2 to 2 and a half years old. What is the approximate IQ? Dogs can understand very basic addition and subtraction, and can understand more than 150 words!

The dog IQ ranking actually originated from the book “Canine IQ”, written by Dr. Coren, a psychology professor who has studied dog behavior for many years.

This book also refers to and observes more than 200 “dog breeding experts” and “veterinarians” to comprehensively rate the owner’s “comprehension speed” of new commands and “accuracy” and “willingness” to execute the commands. More It is ranking based on the dog’s learning “obedience performance”.

Therefore, “It doesn’t mean that the dogs at the end of the crane are not smart or sensitive”, it more means that they live relatively freely and love to amuse their owners with their cuteness!

Gifted Class: Everyone is a top student

Common dogs in gifted classes include “Border Collie”, “Poodle”, “Doberman Pinscher” and “Labrador”. They are all born to be academic masters!

Labrador Retriever

They will be able to understand what the owner teaches them after demonstrating it about 5 times, and they are also willing to follow the owner’s instructions. They are good examples of smart and well-behaved babies!

Previous Class: I am talented

Common dogs in the previous class include “Corgis”, “Schnauzers”, “Cocker Spaniels” and “Pomeranians”. Each of them is a dog with excellent memory.

Are Corgis easy to breed?

Although it takes about 10 repetitions to teach them to really learn it, once you practice a few more times to let them grasp the key points, they will respond quickly and accurately when the password is given!

Before Middle Class: As long as you work hard, you will be a dark horse

Common dogs for middle-class include “Yorkshire”, “Samoyed”, “Spanish Terrier” and “Dalmatian”. These dogs are actually very smart. It depends on whether our owners have the “patience” to teach or are attractive enough. Their “toys” and “food”.

Yorkshire Terrier

It only takes about 15 times of training. Although the response is not as sensitive as the previous class, the performance is still very good!

Middle class: Let’s Talk About CHU

Common dogs in the middle class include “Husky”, “Bichon Frize”, “Dachshund” and “Shiba Inu”. It seems that these dogs cannot be taught, but in the end they are very smart when they cause trouble, acting cute and pretending to be innocent. Come.

Siberian Husky

Many of them really understand, but they pretend not to know. There is nothing they can do… This is the IQ ranking. They can hide their strength. If they are the most scheming, they should definitely take the first place!

Backstage Class: It’s Called Anything Goes

Common dogs in the backstage class include “Pugs”, “French Bulldogs”, “Maltese” and “Chihuahuas”. These dogs are more difficult to teach not because they are stupid, but because they are too easily distracted. .

Should you walk your Maltese?

One second you may be listening to the owner, and the next second you may be thinking about where to find delicious food. When you look back, you will look confused: “Who am I? Where am I? What are you talking about?”

You may be able to succeed if you teach hard enough to practice 40 times, but in the end it still depends on its mood before it is willing to show off!

Cowherding Class: I’m just cute

Common dogs in the cowherding class include “Shih Tzu”, “Chow Chow”, “Peking Dog” and “English Bulldog”. These dogs naturally treat humans as “partners and family members”, but rarely treat us as “Owner”.

Shih Tzu

Therefore, it is useless to give orders to them, and they will fall behind in intelligence test standards. But in fact, they are lively and cute, and they understand what we want to do, but they have personalities, and obeying orders is not in their dictionary.

But what does it matter if you don’t want to learn commands? Adapting to a dog’s personality and getting along with it also brings us endless joy, and that’s enough!

Simple intelligence test for dogs: 5 questions to try!

Simple intelligence test for dogs

Do you really want to appeal after seeing the ranking of your dog? Or is his breed not on the list?

Especially the owners of “Mix” dogs may also want to know whether their mixed-breed dogs are more intelligent? 』

We have compiled relevant books and documents on dog intelligence assessment and provided a 5-question test that can calculate the dog’s intelligence by simply interacting with it!

Because the brains of puppies are not fully developed, dogs must be at least 1 year old before they can be tested!

Test 1. Know how to play games

Although old-fashioned, this game is one of the must-have dog intelligence tests!

Please prepare three identical “covers” and put “treats” in one of the covers in front of the dog. After shuffling the order as quickly as possible in front of the dog, see if the dog can find the cover with treats?

  • Find it the first time: score 3 points
  • Guess wrong once before finding it: score 2 points
  • Found last or played incorrectly: 1 point

Test 2. Cover your face with a towel

Please take a towel that can completely “cover” the dog’s head, gently cover the dog’s head, and time how long it takes for the dog to break free.

  • Can break free within 1~15 seconds: 3 points
  • Break free in about 15-30 seconds: 2 points
  • Effort lasts longer than 30 seconds or continues with towel over head: 1 point

Test 3. Performance outside the home

Please find a time that is not a fixed time for going out for a walk, and within the dog’s field of vision, pick up the “keys” and items that are usually used for “walking” and see what the dog’s reaction is?

  • Dog acting excited and running to the door in anticipation of going out: 3 points
  • Don’t go over until the owner is already at the door looking at it or making a move to call it: 2 points
  • Looks at owner suspiciously but does nothing: score 1 point

Quiz 4. Configuration changes

First, let the dog leave the room where it usually stays. This room should originally have a “nest” where the dog likes to sit or lie down, and begin to change the “furniture display” in it, including chairs, lamps, kennels, etc., and then let the dog What was your reaction when you came in to see it?

  • Knows that there are changes in the furnishings but is not surprised when they happen. When you find your favorite place, go there: 3 points
  • I’m a bit unaccustomed to changes in furnishings. It took me more than 30 seconds to smell and walk around before settling on it: score 2 points
  • No abnormality found, no attempt to find a love home or favorite furniture: 1 point

Quiz 5. Self in the mirror

First, lightly stick a piece of eye-catching paper on the dog, such as a sticky note. Try not to let it feel it or take it off by itself after seeing it immediately.

Then put the dog in front of the “mirror” and let it see the “paper” and “self”. Observe the dog’s reaction?

  • Knows that it is yourself in the mirror and tries to get rid of the piece of paper after seeing it: 15 points
  • Take a photo or interact with yourself or the piece of paper in the mirror: score 2 points
  • No reaction when looking in the mirror: 1 point

Finally, we add up the observed results of the above 5 questions according to the scores of the most similar behaviors, and we can get the result of the dog’s intelligence level!

15 points or more: Your dog is extremely smart!

If you can understand that the dog in the mirror is “self”, it means that the dog has “self-awareness”, which is one of the ways to distinguish highly intelligent creatures.

If a dog can really understand, then don’t doubt it, it will definitely exceed the IQ ranking of dogs!

13~14 points: Be careful, he may be clever and naughty!

The IQ of dogs in this position is definitely above average. No matter if it uses its intelligence in playing games, causing trouble, listening to instructions, etc., it is definitely the best among the best. If you underestimate it, it may be turned back by the dog. An army!

9~12 points: Although he is not smart, he still understands you!

The intelligence of the dogs here is at an average level. Although it is not that smart, if the owner calls it or teases it, the dog can still understand and respond!

From this point of view, we can know that dogs are actually very intelligent species and can understand very high-level and complex emotional expressions.

5~8 points: So what if you didn’t do it! This is what he calls doing whatever he wants~

Dogs in this position may not really have substandard intelligence. Many of them are caused by a lack of “carefulness” and “sensitivity.” They also prefer to be themselves and live according to their mood.

The results of the above-mentioned tests may be different if tested at different times. Intelligence tests are just one more interesting interaction with dogs. Since dogs are so casual, we don’t need to take the results too seriously!

1~4 points: Why are you thinking so much? It is enough for him to just think about loving you!

The dog here can only be said to be too carefree. It may live the life of a young master/young mistress. Because it relies too much on the things arranged by its owner, it completely loses the ability to use its brain or respond to changes, and its reaction is always ” Half a beat.”

But thinking about it on the other hand, it’s great to be able to let a dog live like this silly but without worries and happily!
